Hello : )
I've been in this tribe for a few years, and it's been pretty dead. Now there are a few people posting, and I notice the moderator unsubscribed. Without a word to the tribe (pet peeve, here). Always bad to leave a tribe hanging like this...

Would anyone like to take over the mod position for the tribe?

Aloha!

Jumping into christmas early ~ Ornament ideas please! (x-post)

I'm thinking a head to christmas and am having a tuff time figuring out what I'm going to do. I live in a 30ft 5th wheel trailer now so I need to think light weight. I have a 5ft tree that we want to decorate in a rustic, cabin/lodge style. Nothing fancy or childish. Just simple, earthy ornaments. I have been searching ebay and other places online and am having very little luck getting inspired. So who better to ask than all the crafty crafters here? What are your ideas for christmas ornaments that I can make? Come on..... inspire me!
Thanks! ~Z

when i was a kid growing up, i had a neighbor who made these and they were gorgeous.

she took chicken wire and made a cone with it. about 3 or 4 feet tall, and then using pine cones wired them to the chicken wire. decorated with only red bows. she strung lights thru the wire before she attached the pine cones.
scenting would also be great: cinnamon sticks, orange and apple slices, etc.
it seems like at some point we had discussed this (on another tribe), but it must have been last year, so im reposting it. i'm hoping that i will have the time to make some this year, maybe three of different sizes to put in my front yard.

(crossposting to other tribes) :)

Rexlace...plastic lacing...boondoggle...lanyard...gimp...

One of the great 70s crafts that didn't get mentioned in the recent 70s crafts topic is gimp. At least, that's what we called it in my town in the 70s! So, after 30 years of wishing someone had taught it to me, I'm finally embarking. I found a seller on eBay who will sell you any colors in any length, so bought a 200-yard lot of 75 colors.

Now I need a book. I'm looking for one that shows how to make keychains, necklaces, bracelets, lanyards, etc...but all the books on eBay are either unrated, have crappy ratings, or are mere 20-30 page pamphlets. Anybody know of a good book? Klutz is usually good with this kind of stuff, but their book "Boondoggle" appears to be their worst ever. And I don't want one for "Scoubidou," which is also plastic lacing, but is round, not flat. Any suggestions? I need busywork for four days of sitting in the sun, drinking in the tunes (and beer) at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in a couple weeks.

Hey y'all,

Earlier this month, I purchased a wire-wrapped pendant and a basic wire-wrapping video from Matthew Nix (www.createapendant.com) off of EBAY. The following link will lead you to my first attempts to master the technique.

It has been really fun experimenting this week. Now, I just have to let my weary, sore, and very tired finger tips rest for a few days before the blisters begin to form.

But, is it art or just colored plastic?

Hi y'all,

For many, many years I have been a polymer clay bead fanatic. It seems lately that it is taking up all my free time. I have been getting some nice compliments lately of some of the new stuff I have been producing. So...I entered a contest on Polymer Clay Central's website. They have a monthly challenge for people who do different kinds of polymer clay art to show off what they are doing and possibly win a gift certificate for their efforts. It is not much of a prize but it does have the benefits of some bragging rights in our little craft community.

If you feel the urge to try and decide which of the entries is mine, oops I mean if you would like to vote for your favorite, see the entries here....

I really suck at taking pictures, so be gentle with me. I posted pictures in my profile of some of the things I have been working on... a lot of them are created with at least some recycled items... paper pendants, bangle bracelets from the cardboard inside packing tape, plant hangers crocheted from grocery bags, handbags from VCR tapes... I forgot to take pics of the bracelets and necklaces with bottle caps and paper beads, but hopefully I'll get to that soon. Peace.

Pictures of my beadwork

Greetings to all,
I've been a little silent on this list, well, ok, a lot silent but not anymore. I've posted pictures of my bead work here for all to see. I mainly do peyote stitchwork and as I like to say i can bead anything. I mainly do commission work on ritual tools. So if you know anyone that wants bead work done on ritual tools or just the piece of driftwood they found and have been hanging onto for some unknown reason then feel free to connect them up with me.

Thank you & enjoy

Peace

Ok, so check this out. I worked this festival last summer, the White Mountain Unity Festival. It was raging, small, early season, cold, but a good time. Just good kids, not the average cutsy jerk-offs. It was a small Family Festival. I worked this festival with a kid of mine, he is an amazing wrapper who is falling away from his trade, which really sucks. Wow, too many tangents, back the topic at hand. We payed like $250 for a vending spot, a good friend of mine was involved with the whole shabam and hooked us up. We did not do very well, like I said, it was very small, we were selling really bad ass crystals and wraps. I think it would be wise of some of us to creat sort of a coallition, did I spell that right? Anyway, a coallition of hand crafters, bringing our products to these festivals, spliting the cost of the vending site and raging it up. We can all agree that there is power in numbers. I feel that we need to help eachother out. Handcraft webrings are cool, but for those who do not have a website, yet have some awesome products to get out into the world, it could be very beneficial. If anyone has any input, let me know. I know that it may be a little too late in the season to apply for festival vending sites, but maybe for next year. Let me tell you, it was a blast. Nothing is more fun than setting up shop, kickin it with cool cats and ultimatly getting paid for it. Some of these festivals are pretty decently priced, and most seem to give four wrist bands with every site, so if there was like teams of 4, we can go up to any of these festivals and steal the show. We would all share a site, and that is fun as well. Sharing space in that sort of situation, for me anyway, was a rockin time. So yeah, bounce some ideas around and let me know whats up!

Heya fellow creative peeps,
I'm new here - cool to see a tribe dedicated to some great work!
I do a bunch of different types of handcrafted things: Crystal wrapping, beading, candle making, sewing, stained glass, painting, I could go on...basically I like to add my *touch* to whatever I have (who likes things just -normal-?) So, I have recently got into hemp wrapping and knotting. I love it, and see it incorporating nicely into my crystal work. So....Do any of you know an online resource to get some hemp twine/thread at really good prices? Let me know if. Thanks!!

Brightest Blessings,
Moss )O(

I just want to share with everyone a way to get decent business cards for a decent price. I use www.VistaPrint.com. There are a limited number of designs to choose from (maybe 20 -30 different ones), but you can input your information etc. You can get 200 for "free," which really means for the price of shipping--about $5.

So it is a good deal for those of us who only hand out cards every now and then and don't need super high quality glossy or double sided business cards--although you can get those from this site too, but you have to pay more for them.

Hello -
I have just picked up a second job, so between 2 jobs, full-time student, taking care of my cats, and keeping the house somewhat decent, i do not have much down-time except for eat and sleep. Time management is not a problem and I do find a little time here and there to work a bit on my projects.

I was just wondering....How do you guys cope w/ busy schedules/make time for your projects? It is always neat to hear others' perspectives. :)

It's been a little slow here it seems. Maybe I can stir up some trouble.
Great orange scarf in the photo section.
I've been working on gourd art, learning to use the new wood burning tool as well as getting better with a drill and hand saws and leather dyes.
Tonight I had the idea to crochet some granny square hats. Does anyone remember the hats that were cut from tin soda cans and put together with crochet? I'd love to find some directions for those as well.

If I ever get a jigsaw, I definitely want to make some whirlygigs for the garden.
Is everyone busy shopping or finishing last minute gifts or what?

Thanks bunches! :)

Hey Y'all,

I just received notice from the Texas State Fair that my necklace ("Woody" on my pics page) won the third place ribbon in the fair's very first polymer clay competition. Yea!

Other members of our polymer clay guild in North TX won 1st and 2nd place ribbons. So that means, our little guild swept the awards for the fair. Yea! again.

Now, if only I can turn the bragging rights into some spending money.

I was just approved, so I thought I should introduce myself.

I started making jewelry about 10 years ago, give or take, but I didn't sell any of it until about seven years ago.

About three years ago I started with bath teas, eye pillows, bath salts, etc., then I added salves, lip balms, and solid perfumes about six months ago.

I'm in the process of updating my websites (not an easy task with three kids under 10 running around!), but I should have the info up and running in a couple of days.

I'm really looking forward to being a part of all the creativity flying around here!

pricing, some good advice

Thought I would share this sage advice given to me...when pricing a craft, it is a good idea to consider how long you have been doing your craft. If you have been making jewelry for 10 years, for example, that translates to $10 and hour. If it takes you 20 minutes to make a piece--that in turn is an hour. Use that as your base price and add in supplies etc.

The bottom line is that it is handmade; you made it: it is worth whatever you say it is worth ;-)

joy!

Each month, polymerclaycentral.com hosts a monthly challenge to create a piece of art based on a variety of themes. This month I entered one of my necklaces. If you want, once you have gone to the website, click on the link to the challenge. My entry is #3. While your there please vote for your favorite. There are many entries this month and the competition is really stiff. I voted for #5 myself and almost #7. Really nice work. Thanks

Hi Amber...

You had said in the profile post that you would like to know more about leatherwork/tanning.

Tell me what you want to know and I will try to answer as best I can. Some hides need to be soaked, and there is a not so pleasant odor that goes with the territory (I have been known to wretch at the edge of the woods, and I have a pretty good fortitude) I was basically in the middle of no where then and could do it easily, but if you have neighbors fairly close by and they are not as interested as you are, you may want to find someone with the space (farm area) to accomodate your needs. Different hides can be prepared differently, the hair comes off at different rates etc. So if I can throw some info your way I will be glad to...

your name---- Amber, or Pixie
location---- Charlottesville, VA (for now)
what crafts do you do?---- candles, patchwork, quilting, embroidery, soapstone pipes, beadwork, anything else I can get my grubby mitts on!
how long have you been crafting?---- lifelong, so 24 years
did you learn from a class/person or are you self taught?---- grandmotherly influence, and friends, and experience
do you sell your handmade items?---- I do!
do you have a business? (if so, what's its name?)---- Candles dePixi, not yet an official legal business, but it works for now.
do you sell your crafts online? (website, ebay, community, co-op)---- www.freewebs.com/candlesdepixi or www.tuathadekelti.com
do you vend your crafts at shows and festivals? (which ones?)---- yes, pagan gatherings, including GoTT in VA and a few small ones in TN
do you advertise your handmade items?---- I've been posted about in some forums and on "Chateau Bizarre" but that's about it.
is selling your crafts your full time job?---- not yet...
do you want to be more recognized?---- We'll get there eventually, but I am happy with where I am for now!

Hey Mamas,
I have some friends who have reserved a 10x20 vending space at Smilefest, but don't have enough stuff for that large a space. They are looking to either fill out their booth or resell half the space. I think they are mainly interested in adding more clothes. They asked me but I don't feel I have enough stuff premade. This is next weekend in NC don't forget. If you are interested, get in touch with me and I'll give you the contact info.
hugs

handmade paper jewelry displays

hiya all!

I have started making paper. I love doing it, and it turns out pretty nice (I will try to get some pictures up). I put botanicals in it, so it has a pretty & interesting texture. Anyway, I was thinking that this paper would make great cards for displaying earrings and maybe other jewelry b/c it is thick enough to poke holes in, and it makes a pretty background. I have put lavender buds in some of the paper and it has kept a nice, light floral scent too!

Anyway, I don't make jewelry, so if any of you jewelrymakers out there are interested in getting some of my paper for your displays, let me know.

joy!

I live in Santa Rosa and I've been selling my crafts via Garage/Yard sales at mi casa. I have a huge yard so I was thinking this year it would be great to get a few other Crafters together to sell on the weekends. That way we could split the cost of advertising via flyers/newspaper. And we could get the word out to more people. I have room for about 5 Small booth set-ups. If anyone is interested please send me a message. I usually start the sale in April/May.
